Message from the Dean

Headshot 2026

At Independence Hall, we believe that strong relationships and meaningful connections are at the heart of student success. It is deeply important to me that every child who walks through our doors feels safe, supported, valued, and known. When students feel a sense of belonging and trust, they are better able to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

I also believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential in helping students reach their full potential. Together, we can provide a nurturing, challenging, and positive learning environment where every child can thrive.

Here are a few ways families can support student success at home:

  • Establish a consistent reading routine: While we do not typically assign homework, we strongly encourage students to read for 20–30 minutes each evening.
  • Encourage a love of reading: Reading with your child daily, even for just 15–20 minutes, helps strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence while fostering a lifelong love of learning.
  • Limit screen time: Setting reasonable limits on television, video games, and electronic devices can positively impact focus, behavior, and learning. We especially encourage limiting screen time before school each morning.
  • Celebrate effort and growth: Praising hard work, perseverance, and improvement helps children develop resilience and a growth mindset.
  • Ensure adequate sleep and nutrition: Well-rested and nourished students are better equipped to focus, participate, and learn throughout the school day.
  • Maintain communication with teachers: ParentSquare is an excellent tool for staying connected with your child’s teacher regarding progress, concerns, or ways to support learning at home. Your classroom teacher should always be your first point of contact. Please allow 24–48 hours for responses and be mindful of teachers’ personal and family time outside of school hours.

At Independence Hall, we are committed to supporting the whole child and creating an environment where students feel encouraged to take risks, build confidence, and experience success. Thank you for your partnership, trust, and continued support.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, myself, or the school office if you have any questions or need additional support.

Kind Regards,
Michelle Pollard
Dean of Independence Hall
