Program of Instruction

JHCS is a public charter school, chartered by the Utah State Office of Education. We are a small community school in Pleasant Grove with one class per grade and 160 students in grades K-6.

  • JHCS is a public school founded by parents looking for choice in their children’s education.
  • JHCS does not charge tuition – we are funded like any other public school based on the number of students attending the school.
  • At JHCS, parent involvement is important. Parents agree to donate 40 hours per year to the school. We average between 5,800 to 6,500 hours of volunteer service to the school annually. With approximately 100 families, that represents over 58 hours per family. Our parents are very involved and dedicated to the success of our school.
  • Our population comes from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
  • Our class sizes are between 20 to 24 students per class, with 1 class per grade.
  • We are approved currently for 200 students in grades K-9. Currently we are serving grades K-8.
  • JHCS teachers are state certified and follow the same requirements as any other public school.
  • JHCS uses the Core Knowledge Curriculum.

Belief Statements:

  • We believe all students can learn.
  • We believe education is the shared responsibility of students, parents, school staff and the community.
  • We believe that a school should be a safe, nurturing environment.
  • We believe that the cultural and fine arts are necessary and important to the growth of a child.
  • We believe all children are entitled to an education that is challenging and gives them a feeling of success.
  • We believe teachers with high expectations affect student performance.
  • We believe that learning is a lifetime process and it is our responsibility to build a strong foundation based on academic and social skills.
  • We believe that students have the right to learn something new every day.

John Hancock Charter School has been the best school for my kids! This is the eighth year I've been at JHCS and I can say that no other elementary school- charter or not- can provide a better experience, a better team of teachers and staff members, a better curriculum for their students, or a better environment to learn in. Those who are lucky enough to get into John Hancock Charter School feel as if they are part of one big family. The director and Principal of the school- for fifteen years now- has done an outstanding job making John Hancock Charter School one of the best schools in all of Utah!

I love John Hancock Charter School. They have amazing teachers and staff, small class sizes, and really inspire a love for learning. While not the most aesthetically pleasing campus, they use all resources and money to go directly back to help the students which is obviously most important.

Joining JHCS has been one of the best decisions my husband and I have made for our children. They are receiving a top notch education and are growing and flourishing in their schoolwork. What doesn’t show up in their test scores are the extras that make JHCS stellar. The emphasis on a growth mindset and the encouragement to learn beyond the classroom will help them throughout their entire lives.
